The big DEB8TE

What Happened?

The Big Debate took place on Wednesday 27th of Febraury 2008 in the Civic Centre, Motherwell.

It was a "Question Time" style event, which offered young people the opportunity to put questions to decision makers about services for young people. Almost 300 people (aged 12-25) attended, from schools, colleges, youth groups and children's house across North Lanarkshire.

The panel was made up of the following memebers:
- Grant Thomson, Lanarkshire L107, Chair of the Panel
- Iain MacAuley, Service Manager, Children and Families, Housing and Social Work Services, North Lanarkshire Council
- Stephen Kerr, Head of Planning and Performance, NHS Lanarkshire
- Councillor Jim Logue, Convenor, Learning & Leisure Services, North Lanarkshire Council
- Jane Liddell, Head of Education Quality and Development, Learning & Leisure Services, North Lanarkshire Council
- PC Derek McWhinnie, Strathclyde Police

The event was opened by Gayle Campbell and Fiona Beaton, who are heavily involved in Youth Buzz. Both spoke about the importance of young people having a voice and young people telling service providers what they want to see developed.

Next up was Jane Liddell who is Head of Service within the Learning and Leisure Department. She gave an overview of how important the council and its partners see the involvement of young people in shaping services and how this happens in particularly within schools.

Kirstin Thomson, Dialogue Youth Co-Ordinator within the Young Scot NL then led an interactive voting session using "who wants to be a millionaire" style keypads.

This was followed by a very interesting and lengthy debate charied by Grant Thomson. The panel worked through a number of questions, covering subjects such as relationships between young people and the police, lack of youth facilities, transport, anti-social behaviour and exam pressure to name but a few.

Then our Youth Buzz Members summed up the day as a great success and thanked all for taking part and contributing.

Young People attending evaluated the event.

Logo Competition

Brilliant Entries for Logo Competition

In 2007 Motherwell Community Forum was (& still is) keen to engage with as wide a cross-section of residents in the Motherwell area. The Forum wrote to the Head Teacher's of Braidhurst HS, Dalziel HS and Our Lady's HS, as part of this engagement process; the Forum hoped that it could enlist the assistance of the pupils in designing a Logo. The Forum intended to use the logo on all future correspondence/publicity material; prizes were on offer too.

Duncan Chisholm, Braidhurst High School's Principal Teacher of Art and Design submitted 11 entries - 4 from S1 and 7 from S3 pupils. The entries were of an extremely high standard. All pupils are to be congratulated; their work reflects well on the quality of teaching at Braidhurst High School.

In the coming weeks, look out for an article in the School pages of the Motherwell Times.

The results and submitted entries are listed below.
